Julian's bike club and British Cycling had Julian try out track riding at the Manchester Velodrome. I've never done this, but it's like relearning to ride the bike. Track bikes are bare bones cycling: a seat, pedals, handlebars, 2 cogs, a chain and a fame. That's it! Notice that I didn't specify brakes. The bike is a fixed gear and you can't pedal it backwards so you stop by slowing down your pedalling, but you have to keep pedaling otherwise you'll get thrown off the bike. There is a sign that reminds you to KEEP PEDALLING.
Neat huh. Oh yeah and your pedals are clipped in so your feet are glued to the pedals.
Julian was pretty timid but loved it and warmed up to it towards the end. He wants to go back. Here are some photos.
