Back in the saddle and phonetics

Dear Blogsite,
I'm sorry I've not put in an entry about the interesting life of the kiddos for quite quite some time. I have no excuse, but maybe you can help me get back in the saddle by hearing me out about my hangups. One issue is that I've been conflicted and having Hamlet moments where I don't know whether to upload some photos to Facebook and tell the kiddos' stories there or to blog properly. Now that I think about it, although Facebook is certainly convenient, the blog has a much more specific purpose: document the lives of the kids for posterity. Also who reads long stories on Facebook. Not me! Updating the blogsite is as easy as sending an email and I can add an attachement. It also seems less fleeting than social media. The second hangup is just being darn tired all the time. It's the "I'm busy" hangup. So I've added to my calendar a weekly reminder to remind myself to write down those stories that remind me, remind us, of the wonderful things that kids do. At some point they'll be older and the rules will change so who knows how long I can keep up the blogging momentum. But at least for now I've identified and dealt with the hangups.

So here is a story. Reading to the kids at night is a bit more scattered than it used to be. Maya loves reading to herself so she usually reads in her own bed. We now have a dog named Tia (Carole Ainsley's dog that we're co-sharing) and Tia sleeps next to Maya's bed, so another reason for her to stay in her room: cuddle the dog and read a book of her own choice.

But Julian still likes me to read to him and his English teacher also assigns him reading to me, which is quite cool. I love hearing his voice as he reads me to sleep. Anyhow, so we both hop in the large bed in the "parent's room" and he will read to me and then I'll read to him. We still can't properly finish a book because we have a stack of about 10 of them by the bed. We read a bit from "The World According to Bob" about a cat that befriended a busker and drug addict in London and helped to change his life, and the original one "A Streetcat named Bob". Sometimes it's Asterix and Obelix too. We like the Bob books because they remind us of grandpa bob, who also has a cat like the cat Bob, but not a drug problem.

I'm on a flight now going across the Atlantic on an A380 and miss Amanda and the kids quite a bit. Too much travelling if you ask me. I'm looking forward to Christimas when things will settle down travel wise for me. I long to be at home.

So I'm thinking back to last night's reading with Julian. Julian rummaged through the stack of books and found an old notebook that he and Maya had used to scribble things in. We started reading some of the notes. It turned out to be a bit of a secret diary. On one page Maya had been practicing her rhyming skills. I attach a photo below. At the top of the page is says: "Rims whith pee". Then at the bottom she lists all the words that she can think of that rhyme with pee: "ME flea bee tree tea lee DC".

Julian and I laughed our heads off. It just so happens that I am flying to Washington DC. And, yet it does rim whith pee. ;-)

Oh yeah. Julian is getting bigger and heavier. So when he falls asleep he needs to be moved. Happy to say I can still move him!

Message for Delia Ray from Maya and Julian

Dear Delia,

As you know Julian and Maya may well be your biggest UK fans (or at least the most willing to tell you how much they like your books and to provide storyline suggestions). It took us about 5 month to finish reading your latest book on Finding Fortune. I read a few pages to them every night before bedtime. We've now completed it and Maya is eager for your next book. I told her that even though we read your books at a leisurely pace it takes you a few years to write the next book. (No pressure!)

Maya says "Finding fortune was an interesting book about a girl who was trying to find fortune herself as well as living in a small city named Fortune. Hugh seemed a little annoying compared to Julian (and Julian can be very annoying at times). I like the way that she thought very sensibly to run away to Fortune when her mother was not telling her the truth."

I couldn't get a quote from Julian because he is the first one to fall asleep. So the guy is sawing logs next to us as we type this, dreaming about finding fortune no doubt.

However, even after all the evidence they are still not convinced that I have met a famous author named Delia Ray. They are convinced that I visit Iowa to "chat" with Matt and to leave their favorite toys with the patients (as I did last year). Maya's theory is that I buy your books at an Iowa City book store and sign them myself. To prove it Maya gave me a piece of paper and asked me to copy your note to them. I did just as she requested and fell into Maya's trap: of course my note looked like yours when I tried to copy it. Actually she was quite stern that I copy it exactly as you had written it.

Anyhow, it might be best to bring them along to Iowa at some point so that they can meet you.

On a final note, Maya wonders what your new book is going to be about. She was curious whether it would be about a little girl named Maya and her brother Julian going on an adventure. The adventure could be anything that you would like it to be.

Best of wishes with the research on your new book.

-Maya, Chris (secretary for Maya) and sleepyhead Julian
